Join the wealthy and wiley William J.
Arkell (portrayed by Grant Cottage staff member Ben Kemp) as he tells the story
of his ambitious Victorian-era resort project on Mount McGregor.
Discover how as a young man Arkell embarked on a mission to draw visitors
from nearby Saratoga Springs to his mountaintop paradise. Those visitors would
include Civil War general and two-term president Ulysses S. Grant, who
died in a cottage at the resort in 1885. The presentation will feature images
of the luxurious wilderness resort provided by the wonders of the magic
lantern. Artifacts associated with the resort and Grant Cottage Historic Site
will be on display.
